The Wabash and Manchester girls’ basketball teams were battling for the second time this season Saturday, as the lady Apaches paid Manchester a visit in a TRC match up. Wabash had defeated Manchester in the county tourney in December 52-27 and backed that up with a 63-31 win Saturday.
The game started in a helter smelter fashion with the first four possessions ending with a turnover. Kyleigh Hampton would break the ice with a three pointer to give Wabash a 3-0 lead and Wabash built the lead to 5-0 with two Claire Cromer free throws. Cierra Carter would stop the Apache run with a bucket to make it 5-2 and the Lady Squires hung close, trailing just 9-6 when Cromer hit a free throw and Lyndsie Thomas a bucket to stretch the lead to 12-6. Kiana Gillum and Lyndsie Thomas would trade buckets to end the quarter as Wabash led 14-8.
The second quarter would be all Apaches as Wabash went on a 9-0 run to start the quarter. Lyndsie Thomas would hit two buckets and a free throw that was followed by a bucket from Sarah Puckett and a three from Hampton to lead 23-8. Sydney Snep would hit a free throw to stop the Wabash run, but Thomas and Puckett would score to make it 28-9. Drew Thompson drained a three to make it 28-12, when Cromer and Sarah Ritter answered to make it 32-12 at the half.
The third quarter would heat up a little as the two teams played to a 15-15 tie. The Lady Squires would cut the lead to 36-21 behind Carter, Kaitlyn Parrett and Sydney Snep, but the trio of Cromer, Thomas and Hampton kept Manchester at bay with Wabash leading 47-27 after three.
The Apaches would apply their dominance in the fourth quarter once more, starting the quarter on a 6-0 run. Wabash got buckets from Cromer, Puckett and Hampton. After a Tabby DeWitt bucket stopped the 6 point run, Lyndsie Thomas would go on her own 6-0 run to increase the lead to 59-29. After a bucket from Ellie Milam, Heather Miller would connect twice as Wabash went on to the 63-31 final.
