Eldon Snyder, 100

Eldon Eugene Snyder, 100, North Manchester, died at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 8, at Timbercrest Healthcare Center. He was born Sept. 17, 1913 in South Whitley, to Firmer and Meda (Holler) Snyder.

He was a 1931 graduate of South Whitley High School, and attended Manchester College.  He married Catherine E. Yeager in Columbia City, on Sept. 28, 1932; she died April 10, 2008. At a young age, Gene began working in his father's grocery business.  In 1936, he owned and operated the IGA in Wabash until 1942, when he moved to North Manchester and started Snyder's IGA with his brother Paul. They built the Manchester Plaza in 1962, and sold it in 1989. Gene was a member of the Manchester Church of the Brethren.  He was a lifetime member of the Deming Masonic Lodge #88 F&AM, the Fort Wayne Scottish Rite and Mizpah Shrine, and the Manchester Moose Lodge. 

He is survived by his son, Patrick (Connie) Snyder, Fishers; daughter-in-law, Judy (Michael) Snyder, Avon; four grandchildren, Betsy Miller, Jacksonville, Fla., Scott Snyder, Westfield, Matt (Karen) Snyder, Fishers, and Nick (Margaret) Snyder, Westfield; two step grandchildren, Mark (Kim) Pierson, Fishers, and, Chris (Melissa) Stephens, Avon; seven great grandchildren; two step  great grandchildren, and his sister, Helen Cobb, Terre Haute.  He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Catherine E. Snyder, son, Michael E. Snyder, five brothers, and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, at Timbercrest Chapel, 2201 East Street, North Manchester, with Rev. Kurt Borgmann officiating.  Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester.  Friends may call 3-7 p.m. Tuesday, at Timbercrest Chapel and one hour prior to the service Wednesday.  There will be a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Timbercrest.  Arrangements by Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel, North Manchester.
