The Northfield volleyball team showed the potential to be one of the favorites to challenge for the TRC and sectional titles Thursday with an impressive 25-8, 25-12, 25-14 win over county rival Wabash.
The Lady Norse quickly defended home turf in game one, jumping out to a 9-2 lead. With Abigail Poole serving, the Norse jumped out to a 4-0 lead aided by a Poole ace. Lyndsie Thomas got the Apaches on the board with a kill before Holly Dyson and Kylie Echard pounded out kills to give the Norse the 9-2 lead. Arie Kennedy would record a kill from the back row as the Norse increased the lead to 13-4. At 14-7 Northfield would score five straight before another Thomas kill made it 19-8. The powerful Norse front row would go to work, as Echard would get a kill and a block that was followed by an Elaina Terrell kill for the 25-8 game one win.
Kyleigh Hampton would score the first point of game two with a kill and the Apaches would find Lyndsie Thomas for three kills as the game was tied at 5. The Norse would then catch some momentum with Tory Snyder serving. Snyder would find the open spot for two aces, while Cherish Leming connected on a kill to give Northfield a 10-5 lead. Hampton would keep the Apaches close with a kill, but at 12-8 the Norse would run again. Holly Dyson would sandwich a kill between two Echard kills as the Norse went on an 8-0 run to open a 20-8 gap. Snyder and Dyson would record kills down the stretch as Northfield went on to win game two 25-12. Kristin Cromer had a kill for Wabash.
Wabash would jump out to a 2-0 lead in game three before the Norse got hot. Terrell and Echard would get kills that ignited a 12-2 run to put Northfield up 12-4. Terrell had two aces during a 7-0 spurt during the run with Echard and Snyder getting kills. At 14-6 Wabash would make a comeback. Taylor Cain would start the comeback with a kill with Kyleigh Hampton swatting two kills as the Lady Apaches scored 5 of the next 6 points to close the gap to 15-11. The Norse would then find the hot hand, Elaina Terrell who had four kills during a 10-3 run as the Norse won game three 25-14 and the match 3-0.
For Northfield, Liz Howenstine set up 30 assists on the night to give Kylie Echard and Tori Snyder each 8 kills each. Arie Kennedy had 5 aces and 9 points with 10 receptions, 10 digs and a kill. Abigail Poole led with 12 points and 3 aces. Snyder also contributed 3 aces and Elaina Terrell added 9 points and 2 aces. Poole, Echard, and Marlee Stefanatos each had 5 good receptions on the night. Poole and Echard also picked up 7 digs, while Howenstine and Stefanatos had 4 and 2 respectively. Offensively we had Terrell with 7 kills, Holly Dyson with 5 kills, and Cherish Leming added 2 kills. Kylie Echard tallied 3 solo blocks.
